The TAB Great Chase 2014

Connecting Skills Australia has been happily involved in “The TAB Great Chase” for several years. It is an annual event that is promoted to disability organisations as a free, all inclusive community event.

On 20/8/2014, three groups from CSA (Mornington, Frankston & TTE Frankston sites) attended the ‘Heats’ at Cranbourne Racecourse. CSA were provided random greyhounds to follow across three races. The first two did not cross the line as winners; however we all eagerly awaited the next greyhound to race, “All Strung Out”. With excitement we all headed to the fence to watch our final greyhound race. To our surprise “All Strung Out” ran across the line in first place. CSA won the heat and for the organisation received $500 in prize money. The Semi Finals were held at Warragul Racecourse on 25/8/2014. Unfortunately no CSA groups attended the semi-finals however CSA received a call the next morning from Greyhounds Racing Victoria notifying us that once again “All Strung Out” had won and CSA would receive $1,000  in prize money!

On 3/9/2014 two groups from CSA Frankston and TTE Oakleigh sites attended the Grand Final at Broadmedows Racecourse. The excitement was at fever pitch as we were escorted to the winner’s dining room that overlooked the entire racecourse. We were treated to superb hospitality, including drinks and a wonderful buffet. The Broadmeadows staff were very supportive and accommodating; we were looked after very well. We had a great day with clients eagerly following the races, socialising and positively interacting with each other.

The highlight of the day was with clients and staff waiting at the fence for the start of the race. As the dogs were released and ran past for the first time “All Strung Out” was in third place. It all happened in the last 200 metres with CSA’s greyhound going from the third to first and winning by two lengths! The clients and staff were yelling and cheering; we couldn’t believe our eyes when “All Strung Out” passed the post in first place to win the race! With our greyhound’s success CSA benefited with a cheque for $5,000 in prize money.

We were asked to have photos with our lucky greyhound and also to make a speech. We were all photographed with the dog and our giant cheque! Everyone had such a great time and we are excited to be invited again next year.

On top of the prize money CSA also received  an additional donation of $1,000 from Craig Wilson on behalf of his late parents, Eric and Jan Wilson. This was an unexpected but very pleasant surprise.
